SPORTS REPORT: Caludon claim City Rugby clash

Caludon Year 7 come from behind to record 30-20 win against local rivals Whitley Academy.

In their first match as a year group, the Year 7s showed great promise with all of the early pressure in the match and seemed destined to open the scoring.  Whitley had other ideas, it was their strong centre who broke the deadlock with a long range try. 0-5 to the visitors. Caludon regrouped and again pressed hard only for their defence to be rounded the pacey Whitley winger, which saw them extend their lead by another 5 points.

The Caludon boys kept their heads up, strong tackling from Tash and Nashi lead to possession for Kian who fed Joe for his first try. As Whitley tried to play from their own line, Joe ripped the ball off a Whitley forward and scored his second of the match, levelling up the scores at 10-10. The balance swayed back Whitley’s way, with the Whitley centre scoring an almost identical try to his first to go into the half time break 10-15 up.

Freddie kicked off the second half for Caludon with a very high long kick, as the Whitley defender caught the ball behind his try line, Joe also caught part of the ball, he then ripped the ball from the defenders grasp and grabbed his hat-trick and levelled up the scores once again. David caught the restart and charged down the middle. Riley and Jude cleared the ruck and the ball was passed wide by Kian and Oliver, Thomas took the ball into contact and Liam picked up the ball, crashing through the defence to score, with Caludon taking the lead for the first time in the match, 20-15.

Caludon, full of confidence, were passing the ball with freedom and after a flowing move, Jude fed Kyle for the try of the day. Another try came from a set piece with Joe scoring his 4th and topping off an impressive debut. To Whitley’s credit they launched another long range raid, which finished with a try in the corner, making the final score 30-20 to Caludon for a hard fought victory.
